Marriage
customs and wedding rituals vary, according to culture, religion
and locale, but the steps in the mating dance are fundamental:
Promises
of fidelity and respect, backed by gifts, are exchanged between
the groom and his people and the bride and her people to exhibit
the readiness, seriousness and suitability of the man and
the woman to enter upon a union.
During
a formal ceremony, vows between the man and the woman are
exchanged, wedding rings are bestowed to bond their covenant,
and guests will extend their wishes for good fortune and fertility
to the couple as they offer them gifts and money. The couple,
in turn, will offer tokens of their appreciation to their
guests, extending their own wishes of good fortune to the
people who have helped them share and celebrate their wedding
nuptials.
The
marriage celebration is one of the most traditional rituals
in every society. Because it forges a link in a chain to what
has come before and what is to come, many couples enjoy acknowledging
their heritage and personalizing the celebration by including
traditions and rituals from their roots or the places they
love.
