Before
the wedding the bride takes a ritual bath to purify
her from evil influences and the memories of past
loves. Children set up white ribbons along the
route to block their way, and the bride must cut
them. The French wedding is accessorized in pure
white. The church is filled with incense and flowers
and the couple stands under a silk canopy, formally
a covering called a carre, held over their heads
while the priest gives them the final blessing.

covering is similar to the Jewish Chuppa, and protects the couple
from evil influences. As they leave the church the bride and
the groom are showered with wheat seeds, while laurel branches
are scattered at their feet. At the reception the guests bring
flowers to celebrate the couple's fresh beginning. For the same
reason the bride will wear flowers in her hair or hat. |

| The
bride and groom toast each other from a two-handled cup called
the Coup de Marriage, drinking from the same vessel to denote
their togetherness. This special cup is saved from generation
to generation, and the custom itself descends from a previous
custom that originated the tradition of the Toast. In Brittany
the bride and the groom once sipped from the same glass of brandy
poured over a slice of white bread. The couple had the last
sip from the glass and ate the bread-the toast-for good luck.
