Ah,
the pragmatic English. Through the 16th century
until the 19th century marriages were still being
arranged. Of course, there were always young couples
who chucked it all and just eloped. Despite their
pragmatic traditions, the Brits have had as many
wedding superstitions as everybody else.

| Many
couples married in September, since this was the month known
to ensure wealth for the future. A bride never jinxed her marriage
by using her married name before the actual ceremony. On the
way to her wedding a bride would have good fortune if a chimney
sweep kissed her. For luck, either barley was thrown over the
pair as they entered their feasting place or shortbread was
cast over the head of the bride when she came to her new home.
Flower girls strewed the path of the couple with petals to make
certain the bride's life would be trouble-free and happy. The
groom carried the bride over the threshold to bring her luck
and to avoid trouble. |

| Modern
English weddings follow a general, practical pattern. Simple
invitations are sent out. A stag party for the groom and a hen
party for the bride celebrate their last night of freedom. They
arrive to church in a Rolls Royce rather than a limo. The church
bells peal as the couple enters the church, to ward off evil
spirits. Photos are taken outside of the church and there is
a seated luncheon afterwards called the wedding breakfast. |
