There
is no hard and steadfast distinction, but weddings
in China tend to divide into Traditional, Modern,
and Ethnic. The custom that cuts across the board,
though, is love of the color red. Red in China
symbolizes happiness and prosperity. Today, modern
Chinese brides opt for the white Western wedding
gown, but in former days red was the color motif
that graced everything in a Chinese wedding from
clothes to decorations, even gifts.

| สิ่งแรกที่บอกได้ถึงพิธีการแต่งงาน
ของชาวจีนก็คือ สีแดง นี่แหละค่ะ สำหรับชาวจีนแล้ว สีแดงหมายถึง
ความผาสุขและความมั่งคั่ง ปัจจุบัน เจ้าสาวจีนจะเลือกชุดแต่งงาน
สีขาวตามสไตล์ตะวันตก แต่สำหรับสมัยก่อนแล้ว สีแดง จะปรากฏให้เห็นทุกที่ในงานแต่งงาน

In
a traditional Chinese wedding it is proper for a mother and
a father to seek a bride for their son. As if that were not
enough, there are six forms of etiquette to be followed: Negotiations,
following the request for the marriage; hiring a fortune teller
to investigate the compatibility of the couple's stars; preliminary
gifts for the bride's family to acknowledge the bond; formal
gifts for the bride's family to confirm the bond; hiring a
fortune teller to select the most fortuitous day for the marriage;
and decorating the bride and groom's house in red. For luck,
a man and a woman are brought in to move the bridal bed and
prepare it. They might also be the ones to administer the
ceremonial combing of the bride and the groom's hair in preparation
of the wedding ceremony, a custom to ensure marital harmony,
prosperity and many children.

พิธีแต่งงานของชาวจีนแต่โบราณ
มักจะถูกจัดโดย ผู้เป็นพ่อแม่ จะเป็นฝ่ายเลือกเจ้าสาว ให้กับบุตรของตน
นอกจากนี้ยังมีขั้นตอนต่าง ๆ ที่ต้องปฏิบัติตามเป็นลำดับ ตั้งแต่
การเจรจาต่อรอง การสู่ขอ การว่าจ้างซินแส มาตรวจดูดวงของคู่บ่าวสาว
ว่าสมพงษ์กันหรือไม่ จนไปถึงการตกแต่งเรือนหอ (ต้องเป็นสีแดงด้วยค่ะ)
เพื่อความเป็นศิริมงคล จะมีการจัดหาชายหนุ่ม และหญิงสาว มาทำการเตรียมเตียง
ให้กับเจ้าสาว สองคนนี้อาจเป็นคนเดียวกัน กับคนที่จะทำพิธีหวีผมให้แก่เจ้าบ่าว
และเจ้าสาวตามความเชื่อที่ว่า จะทำให้ทั้งสองรักใคร่ปรองดองกัน
มีความร่ำรวย และมีลูกดก ๆ นอกจากนี้ ยังมีขบวนแห่รับเจ้าสาว จากบ้านของเจ้าสาวมาที่บ้านของเจ้าบ่าว
ตามด้วยพิธีแต่งงาน (ซะที) การสักการะบูชาฟ้าดิน การถวายสัตย์ปฏิญาณ
และการมอบของขวัญให้แก่กัน |

| A
procession with carriage and music is sent forth to fetch the
bride from her home and bring her to the groom's home. The wedding
ceremony follows, with oblations to God, an exchange of vows,
and the giving of gifts. Following the wedding banquet, friends
of the couple will play pranks on them until the bride and the
groom are ready to retire to the bridal chamber. Afterwards
the bride returns to her parents' home for three days before
coming back to her groom with great ceremony. |

| หลังจากนั้นก็จะเป็นงานเลี้ยงฉลอง
ซึ่งถือเป็นเรื่องสำคัญไม่แพ้พิธีแต่งงาน ซึ่งเต็มไปด้วยแขกเหรื่อ
ญาติสนิทมิตรสหาย คนรู้จัก อาหารชั้นดีและสุราไม่อั้นค่ะ จนกระทั่งเจ้าบ่าวเจ้าสาวพร้อมที่จะย้ายเข้าสู่เรือนหอ
หลังจากนั้นเจ้าสาวก็จะกลับไปเยี่ยมบ้านเดิมของเธอเป็นเวลาสามวัน
ก่อนที่จะย้ายกลับมาอยู่กับเจ้าบ่าวเป็นการถาวร พร้อมกับมีพิธีฉลองยิ่งใหญ่อีกครั้ง
